Hungry Hearts Foundation kicks off inaugural annual Derby in Lake Stevens
Lake Stevens, WA – July 5, 2016 – The Hungry Hearts Foundation (HHF) kicks off its inaugural annual Lake Stevens Derby charitable fundraising competition this week, benefiting the Foundation, in preparation for the start of the next school year.
It all began with a regular visit to a local Wells Fargo bank. There, the bank was hosting their annual Incentive Pony Campaign and a mascot stuffed animal was on display in the lobby – a pony named Nellie. According to Wells Fargo, the campaign honors 16 real horses by the same names that the bank had used to transport its wagons full of coins and goods along the early transport routes in North America.
During the campaign, local banks are on the lookout for a charitable organization to donate their ponies to. This year, two local Wells Fargo locations donated their stuffed ponies to HHF. And so Nellie and El Toro moved to their new stable, resting safe and sound, guarding the food at the Foundation’s food distribution facility, while waiting patiently to get back out and do what they do best. Their time to shine has now come.
Over the next couple of months, Nellie and El Toro will be competing against each other to raise money for the HHF. The idea is simple: the ponies will travel from one local business to another, staying no longer than three days at each, allowing each business and its customers to contribute to this fundraiser. When the time is up, the business owner has the chance to “rope up” the ponies at the next local business, all in good spirit and for a good cause.
Businesses and their customers will have the chance to donate to this cause, and take pictures with the ponies and share them with the HHF using the Twitter hashtag #HHFDERBY if they so choose, including their support of either #TEAMNELLIE or #TEAMELTORO. The community will be able to track the current location and fundraising amounts for each horse at hungryheartsfoundation.com and its Facebook and Twitter accounts.
The ponies will arrive at their finish lines on September 2, 2016 at two Wells Fargo locations in Lake Stevens where they will make a final push toward victory. The derby fundraiser concludes on September 9, 2016 and the pony that raises the biggest purse donation will be declared the winner. The money raised will help the Foundation buy more quantities of food and offer healthier food options to the children enrolled in the HHF program, as well as allow for future program offerings.
